Watford, Southampton eye Barcelona’s Thomas Vermaelen

Thomas Vermaelen looks set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer this summer with several Premier League clubs interested in a deal, say El Mundo Deportivo.

Watford and Southampton are the two clubs directly mentioned in the report, published on Monday, which clarifies that the Belgian is now actively planning his future.

The 33-year-old’s contract at the Camp Nou expires in June and there is little indication he will be offered an extend deal, partly due to his recent injury record.

Barca already have a selection of Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet to choose from in the position while they are reportedly targeting a move for Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt.

Vermaelen has started just 32 league games across the last six seasons although 12 of those arrived under Ernesto Valverde last season.
