Ruben Baraja ‘thankful’ to Sporting Gijon after sacking

Ruben Baraja is ‘very grateful’ to Sporting Gijón for his year in charge of the club despite being dismissed this weekend.

Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Real Oviedo, in the Asturian derby, saw the former Valencia midfielder sacked from the role at which he was appointed last December.

“The results, we accept as professionals, determine the reality, but do not reflect the work done,” Baraja wrote in an open letter to fans on the club’s website.

“When at the beginning of the summer, between several options, we decided our continuity in Gijón we knew that the bar was high.

“But we had the clear ambition to improve last season. It could not be, but there are no regrets, because for every day at Sporting de Gijón one must be grateful.”

Baraja won 20 of his 43 games in charge of Sporting but has left his side 14th in La Liga 123 with just three wins from 14 matches this season.
