Marcelino: Valencia ‘not in crisis’, despite 10th draw

Marcelino insists Valencia showed they were ‘not in crisis’ at Athletic Bilbao, despite his side recording their 10th draw of the season.

Saturday’s stalemate at San Mames extended Valencia’s run of draws to five, while leaving them with just one win from their opening 13 games in all competitions.

“Playing at Athletic is very complicated and more so when you go toe-to-toe with them,” said the Coach after the final whistle.

“You have to win 50-50s so you can threaten your opponents. We made clear chances and I think we deserved to win, but it’s another case of us hitting the woodwork.

“There were also times when we could’ve combined better. If we went ahead on the scoreboard, it would’ve been different.

“The first half was very tight against a very physical midfield, and it was normal for them to do better in the game at that point.

“After that, we created more chances to win than they did. When we score a goal, we concede one and when they don’t score, we’re not lucky enough to score ourselves.

“Draws weigh on you. I’ve been a professional Coach for 15 years and I’ve never drawn so many games.

“Still, our season isn’t almost over, nowhere near. The team aren’t in crisis because we wouldn’t have played like we did.”

The result was also no good for Athletic, who have drawn seven of their last nine matches and have not won since beating Leganes in Week 1.
