Julen Lopetegui backs introduction of VAR

Julen Lopetegui has praised the impact of VAR on Spanish football as it allows officials to be ‘more informed’ on decisions.

His Real Madrid side benefitted from Marco Asensio’s goal – which had initially been flagged for offside – awarded upon reflection by the system in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Espanyol.

“I do not want to comment on opinions that others have expressed about it,” Lopetegui told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“It is obvious that VAR helps officials see decisions which are not clear in a more informed manner and that can only be a good thing.

“This is not complete perfection because such a thing does not exist, but I approve of a system that is an upgrade on what was available before.

“Dani Carvajal? We hope to have him back for this game (at Sevilla) but he is still not ready, he has not recovered as quickly as we initially thought. For Atleti? We wait and see.

“Luka Modric winning The Best? I do not have much time for individual awards, although I am happy my player won this honour, but I do not have any further opinion.”
