Marcelo: Madrid squad strong enough

Real Madrid defender Marcelo insists the club’s squad is strong enough to mount a challenge on all fronts with no further signings.

The Brazilian was speaking after Wednesday night’s 4-2 European Super Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid, prompting suggestions the European champions may enter the market again this summer.

“We have a good squad, there is depth,” Marcelo told reporters, in quotes cited by Marca.

“The responsibility of transfers at this club is not mine and of course any new players will be warmly received, but these are just my opinions.

“Congratulations to Atletico tonight, they deserved the victory and we will need to improve a lot for the league starting.

“Defeats like these are always hard to take but we made mistakes and were punished, now we must work at changing the momentum as the season starts.”

Madrid’s major arrivals this summer have been Thibaut Courtois, Alvaro Odriozola and Vinicius Junior but they are yet to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Juventus for €100m.
