Celades leaves Spain Under-21 role

Albert Celades has left his role as Spain Under-21 Coach after four years in the role, the Spanish FA have confirmed via a statement.

The former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo midfielder had been linked with the temporary first-team Spain squad following the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui, before the role was subsequently handed to Fernando Hierro.

He took charge of La Rojita in 2014 but faced criticism during last summer’s European Championships for reliance on too many individuals, including Gerard Deulofeu – who was played whilst carrying an injury.

The 42-year-old was at the helm of a highly-rated group of individuals whom he guided to second place last summer.

Celades won four caps for the Spanish national team during his playing career and was part of the squad for the 1998 World Cup.
