Sevilla join race for Mikel Merino

Sevilla are the latest team to join the race for out-of-favour Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino, according to reports.

Both El Diario Vasco and Cronhicle Live state Los Rojiblancos are in the running for the Spaniard, with ABC de Sevilla stating the interest stems from the possibility of Ever Banega departing this summer.

Real Sociedad, Real Betis, Villarreal and Athletic Club Bilbao have all been linked with a move for the 21-year-old, who looks set to leave the Magpies this summer.

The Pamplona-native joined the English club from Borussia Dortmund last summer but started only 14 matches in England’s top flight and his exit would be sanctioned.

Merino left Osasuna in 2016 but made only two starts in the Bundesliga for Dortmund and now is said to want to return to La Liga.

Bahía Internacional represent the Pamplona native and are said to have met with Betis representatives last week to attempt to speed up a deal.
