Merino set for La Real?

Real Sociedad are reportedly confident of signing Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino.

According to AS, there is ‘moderate optimism’ on La Real’s part that Merino will be their first addition under new sporting director Roberto Olabe.

The newspaper explains the former Osasuna and Borussia Dortmund starlet has been offered a five-year contract by Los Txuriurdin, which would make him one of their best-paid players.

The 21-year-old would have also been promised an important role by new boss Asier Garitano, while the Basques have ‘no problem’ with paying ‘close to €10m’.

However, the publication warns Real Betis could yet hijack any deal and offer European football, with Fabian Ruiz set to join Napoli imminently.

Merino made 24 appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side in the Premier League last season, but only seven came after the turn of the year.
