Hierro defends under-fire De Gea

Hierro leapt to the defence of David de Gea after his gift for Cristiano Ronaldo during Portugal-Spain. “We won’t abandon any of our family.”

“We have to be very proud of the kids, they showed commitment,” said La Roja’s new boss after they kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 3-3 draw on Friday.

“It’s a pleasure when you have players like that. They have character and quality. They don’t doubt what they want. Getting up twice was very important.

“De Gea? We’re a team and we know players can have better days. We’re a family and we’re a team. Diego Costa has done. We won’t abandon any of our family.

“It’s all about the team, nothing more. We know these things this happen. I hope we’re here for a long time and everyone will be important, from No 1 to No 3.

“Costa? They had a plan and we felt it was a game in which Diego could give us a lot. There naturality and normality here.

“The people who stayed with us have helped us a lot and we appreciate their help. Ronaldo? When you have a player like him, these things can happen.

“When we were on top, with great confidence, he scored the second goal. One detail was enough.

“It wasn’t an easy situation to come into, when you have people like ours, they make your life a lot easier. They showed a lot commitment, and I thank them.”
