Spain: Celades ‘in charge v Portugal’

Spain Under-21 Coach Albert Celades will take charge of Spain for Friday’s World Cup clash against Portugal, say reports in Spain.

Cadena Ser say the former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo midfielder will take the helm temporarily following the dismissal of Coach Julen Lopetegui.

Celades has not always impressed with a hugely talented Under-21 squad, whom he guided to the final of last summer’s European Championships, where they were defeated by Germany.

He took charge of La Rojita in 2014 but faced criticism during last summer’s tournament for reliance on too many individuals, including Gerard Deulofeu – who was played whilst carrying an injury.

The 42-year-old had been reported to take the reins alongside Spanish FA coach Fernando Hierro.
