Arsenal confirm Emery appointment

Arsenal have appointed former Valencia and Sevilla Coach Unai Emery as their new manager, it has been confirmed.

The 46-year-old was a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, whom he guided to a domestic treble this season.

Manchester City assistant manager and former Gunners captain Mikel Arteta had been strong favourite to succeed Arsene Wenger before reports late on Monday evening that Emery would be the new man at the helm.

The Basque native has also been linked with a return to Spain this summer, having previously managed in La Liga with Almeria, Valencia and Sevilla – whom he guided to three successive Europa League titles.

Reports had suggested a Sevilla return or a move to boyhood club Real Sociedad – both currently without managers – would be a possibility.

Emery announced last month he would leave French champions PSG when his contract expired at the end of the season. He was replaced by former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel, who had also been linked with the Arsenal job.

An announcement was confirmed on Wednesday morning with a news conference expected later this week, but contract length has not yet been confirmed.
