Madrid in favour of Club World Cup

Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno has revealed the club are in favour of a 24-team Club World Cup.

FIFA have suggested a revamp of the tournament from 2021 in a bid to make it more appealing to sponsors, and Butragueno says Los Blancos are behind the decision.

“We think it could be a very interesting competition for the supporters, “the former striker told Real Madrid TV.

“We honestly think it could be very attractive. We are talking about the best European teams and those from other continents, so that should make it interesting.

“It’s how we see it and other important clubs in Europe, who are also keen on the possibility.”

The new set-up envisages the tournament taking place over three weekends in June or July, according to the international football calendar.
