Real Sociedad captain Xabi Prieto to retire

Real Sociedad captain Xabi Prieto has confirmed he will retire at the end of the season after 14 years in the club’s first-team squad.

The 34-year-old has represented the club and it’s B side across all four of Spain’s top divisions while he made 530 first-team appearances since his debut in 2003.

“His class on and off the field will remain forever etched in the memory of the Real Sociedad family,” read a statement from the Basque club.

“Thanks for everything, Xabi!”

Prieto – who developed a reputation as a set-piece specialist – netted 80 goals for the club across his career, and will retire as the club's fifth highest appearance maker of all time.
