Filipe Luis targets World Cup return

Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis looks set to miss the rest of the season but may return in time for the World Cup this summer.

The Brazilian defender was stretchered off just after the hour mark in Thursday’s 5-1 victory at Lokomotiv Moscow in the Europa League with a fractured fibula.

The full-back underwent radiological tests as soon as he returned to Madrid with the worst fears concerned, with Marca reporting he looks set to miss eight weeks of action.

The 32-year-old is in his second stint at Atleti having re-joined the club from Chelsea in 2015, with Sime Vrsaljko or Lucas Hernandez set to deputise in his absence.

Luis missed the 2010 World Cup with injury and will be keen to fight back to fitness for this year’s tournament, which is less than three months away.
