Calleja: Euro race will go to the wire

Villarreal Coach Javier Calleja believes the battle for European places will ‘go to the wire’ ahead of his side’ clash with Eibar.

Two Europa League spots will be allocated to teams in 5th and 6th, alongside 7th should Sevilla be one of the sides who finish in the top six.

“Eibar will look to defeat us to gain confidence in their fight for Europe,” Calleja told his pre-match press conference.

“They are a direct rival for us and it will be a very complicated match, we must approach it as another final in our fight for Europe.

“A lot of games leads to tiredness and exhaustion, but we are motivated and that in our head is more important than our physical conditions.

“The fight for Europe is particularly tough this year with a lot of teams in the mix, on their own merits and each with a different brand of football – it will go to the wire.”

Villarreal and Sevilla currently occupy the spots but Girona, Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Getafe and Eibar are among the sides pushing for Europe.
