Rico: ‘Hard to stay up’

Leganes full-back Diego Rico says his side ‘always knew it would be difficult to stay up’ after a 3-0 defeat to Girona.

Los Legienarios were comfortably beaten on their visit to the Estadi Montilivi, failing to score for the fourth match in succession in all competitions.

“Girona started very well and took their chances,” 24-year-old Rico commented.

“We pushed and didn’t take our chances. We hope to get ourselves back up like we did before.”

Rico denied that Leganes’ exertions in the recent two-legged Copa del Rey semi-finals against Sevilla had had a negative effect on the team.

“No, we were doing things well. We need to give 100 per cent in every match, points are very valuable.”

Leganes’ next match is against Real Madrid in midweek and Rico is taking nothing for granted despite his side still sitting eleven points above the relegation zone.

“We hope to push hard this week, which will be very long.

“From the start we knew it would be difficult to stay up, we need to keep working.”
