Canales thankful for Madrid stint

Real Sociedad winger Sergio Canales has thanked Real Madrid for helping his development ahead of his side’s clash this weekend.

The 26-year-old spent one season at the Bernabeu as a teenager, making 23 appearances for the club including 10 in the Champions League.

The wide-man began his career at Racing Santander before joining Valencia in 2011, where he spent two-and-a-half years before joining Real Sociedad.

“I have many happy memories of Real Madrid from my time there, from the club and the fans,” Canales told El Transistor radio, as cited by Marca.

“I developed a lot as a player at the club and while there are not many players left there from my time, it still has happy memories for me despite the lack of game time.

“So many players helped me along the way such as Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa, Antonio Adan and Gonzalo Higuain.

“The Bernabeu is the toughest ground in the league to play as an opposition player and they are not allowed to slip up at home, so it will be tough for us.”
