OFFICIAL: Laporte joins Man City

Manchester City have completed the signing of Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte on a club record fee, it has been confirmed.

The English Premier League leaders triggered the defender’s €65m (£57m) release clause at the San Mames, with a further €5m paid in development rights.

The 23-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half year deal at the Etihad Stadium and will be available for selection immediately.

City confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, following on from Athletic’s confirmation that the defender’s release clause had been triggered the previous day.

“On January 29, 2018, the Spanish Football League (LFP) has certified to our club that player Aymeric Laporte has complied with the requirements to end unilaterally his contract that linked him with Athletic Club,” read an official club statement.

“The cited note points out that the player has stated his wish to end and resolve unilaterally his contractual relationship that had started in the 2009-10 campaign and has deposited the compensation fee that was established in his contract.

“Athletic wants to thank the player for his contribution throughout the time he has been at the club.”
