Torres wants long-term Atleti stay

Fernando Torres is not ready ‘to throw in the towel’ at Atletico Madrid and is hopeful of staying at the club ‘for many years’.

Reports in the Spanish media have claimed the 33-year-old – who’s contract at Los Rojiblancos in June 2018 – will leave Diego Simeone’s side in January.

“I hope this will not be my last season at the club, I want many more,” Torres told Diario AS.

“I’m under contract here and my only aim at the moment is to continue here, and the motivation that it may be my last game for the club drives me on – I need to play each game like it is my last but I’m not going to through in the towel.

“My spell here hasn’t been a gimmick and I’ve had to work for everything and even though I’ve scored goals, it hasn’t been enough alone to guarantee me a start.

“I’m at the club due to my own performances and hard work, and I want to maintain this level to ensure I keep getting more minutes and more opportunities.”
