Maxi Gomez move to China ‘off’

Maxi Gomez looks set to stay at Celta Vigo after a move to Beijing Guoan broke down at the last minute, according to reports in Spain.

The Uruguayan striker had looked set to move to the Chinese Super League club in a deal worth an initial €20m plus €5m in variables.

However, a report in La Voz De Galicia on Tuesday outlined how the Chinese club asked for a last minute reduction in the price which has ‘completely scuppered’ the deal.

The striker was always reluctant to move to the club, with his advisors, former club Defensor Sporting and Celta all open to the deal due to the vast sums of money involved.

Gomez only joined the Galician outfit in June from hometown club Defensor Sporting in a €4m deal, and has netted seven goals in 14 La Liga appearances.

The 21-year-old was top scorer in the Uruguayan domestic league and his fine start to life at Estadio Balaidos – including a brace on his debut against Real Sociedad – earned him a first international call-up.

Gomez signed a five-year deal at Estadio Balaidos and he is now reportedly willing to stay in Spain over Christmas to prepare for the Copa Del Rey clash with Barcelona in early January.
