Giants discover Copa last-16 fate

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will both face lower league opposition in the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey following Tuesday’s draw.

Zinedine Zidane’s side will face Lleida – who produced an extraordinary three-goal comeback against Real Sociedad in the previous round.

La Liga 123 side Numancia, conquerors of Malaga, will face Diego Simeone’s side who are looking to win the competition for the first time since 2013.

There will be another Andalucian derby with La Liga 123 highfliers Cadiz taking on Sevilla – Los Caditanos knocked out Los Rojiblancos’s city rivals Real Betis out of the previous round in a 6-5 aggregate win.

Holders Barcelona have been paired with Celta Vigo – who have reached the semi-final stage of the competition in each of the past two seasons.

Last season’s beaten finalists Alaves will play Formentera, who stunned Athletic Bilbao in the previous round, while Las Palmas take on Valencia, Espanyol play Levante and Leganes were pitted with Villarreal in three clashes between top flight sides.

All first legs scheduled for 2-4 January, with returns scheduled for 9-11 January.
