Late Alaves hat-trick stuns Girona

Ibai Gomez’s late hat-trick saw Alaves lift themselves off the bottom of La Liga with a 3-2 win at Girona, in Abelardo Fernandez’s first game as Coach.

The Basque side had look destined for defeat at Girona as two goals in the space of three, second-half minutes from Christian Stuani and Juanpe put the hosts in control.

Former Middlesbrough striker Stuani cut into the left-hand side of the box to fire the opener on the hour mark and Juanpe crashed home a powerful header two minutes later to make it 2-0.

However, the visitors rallied and Ibai gave them hope in the 71st minute by reducing the deficit, and with three minutes remaining he levelled from the spot.

There was time for more late drama as he netted with three seconds of injury time remaining after a fine run and pass from Munir El Haddadi.

Alaves avoided defeat for only the third time this season and move above Malaga at the foot of the table.
