La Liga Wk13: Las Palmas stop rot

Las Palmas stopped the rot with a point at Real Sociedad in La Liga Week 13, while Girona extended their unbeaten run to five games.

The weekend’s action kicked off at Balaidos, where Celta Vigo trumped Leganes 1-0 on Friday.

Iago Aspas’ penalty condemned Leganes to their fourth straight defeat as Celta fans sang the name of former boss Eduardo Berizzo, who was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, in the sixth minute – that being the number he wore for the Galicians as a player.

Eibar, meanwhile, made it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2017-18 with a 2-1 victory over Basque rivals Alaves.

Joan Jordan and Charles either side of half-time scored the goals to lift Eibar into 14th, despite Burgui’s injury-time consolation.

However, both sides ended the match with 10 men as Christian Santos was dismissed for two bookable offences at the end of the first period, before Charles was shown a straight red card late on.

Girona’s historic spell in La Liga continued with a 2-2 draw at Real Betis, who salvaged a last-gasp equaliser.

Portu’s brace at the end of either half appeared enough for the Catalans to record a fourth 2-1 win in five games, but Cristian Tello rescued Betis a point in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Deportivo La Coruna inflicted similar bad luck on Athletic Bilbao, whose 2-2 draw means they are now without an away win in nine matches.

Markel Susaeta and Inigo Williams twice gave Athletic the lead, but Fabian Schar’s second goal in as many games ensured a share of the spoils for the two strugglers.

Finally, Las Palmas arrested a run of eight consecutive losses after a 2-2 draw with Real Sociedad.

Willian Jose and Adnan Januzaj combined to effectively leave Pako Ayestaran without a job, but Jonathan Viera’s strike midway through the second half afforded the Coach some much-needed breathing space, rubber-stamped by Alvaro Odriozola’s red card at the death.
