Michel: Refs have tough job

Michel Gonzalez refused to criticise the referee for controversially disallowing Malaga’s equaliser against Real Madrid as his kind have a ‘difficult’ job.

Jesus Gil Manzano came under fire for signalling half-time moments before Paul Baysse scored a header on the end of a free kick, but despite Malaga going on to lose 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu, Michel felt his narrative after the match deserved to be about his players.

“Many things are happening to us, many of them bad,” said the Coach.

“The team still believe, but the table is proving tortuous for us. Since [the 3-3 draw with] Athletic, we’ve been getting better.

“In almost every game, we’ve had chances to pull off different results. We had a good game today and [such performances] are no longer one-offs for us. We’re playing with courage and our feet.

“Referee? I don’t know if he hurt us. I thought our goal for 2-2 was legal, but I don’t know if it would’ve changed the result. Refereeing is difficult.

“At Barcelona, one of their goals was a yard offside, here… But I don’t want to focus our attentions on referees. That would take away the credit my players deserve.”
