Barcelona have announced that Lionel Messi has signed a new contract, which ties him to the club until 2021.
A statement on Barca’s official website explains his new deal also includes a €700m release clause.
The news comes a day after the Argentine was awarded the European Golden Shoe for his 37 goals in La Liga last season.
Since making his Blaugrana debut as a 17-year-old back in October 2004, the No 10 has gone on to net 523 times, becoming the club and Spanish top flight’s all-time top goalscorer.
He has also won eight Leagues titles, four Champions Leagues, five Copa del Rey, seven Supercopas, three European Super Cups and three Club World Cups – tying him with Andres Iniesta for most in Barca’s history.
Messi has started the season in similarly-clinical fashion, his 12 goals seeing him once more top the scoring charts in La Liga.
