David Villa: Valencia deserve success

Valencia fans deserve to see their side performing so strongly after years of underachievement, according to former striker David Villa.

Los Che had previously posted two consecutive 12th-placed finish before Marcelino Garcia Toral was appointed this summer, and he is unbeaten so far and has won eight consecutive matches.

35-year-old Villa, who was recalled to Spain’s national side earlier this summer, spent five seasons at the Mestalla and is currently starring for New York City in MLS.

“As a fan of Valencia I’m really happy with the situation at the moment,” Villa told an interview with Marca.

“This club and its fans deserve all the good things that are currently happening, they have suffered for a long time and now their loyalty is being rewarded.

“I’m happy for Coach Marcelino too, as he is the reason for all that is going well with the club at the moment, his start has been incredible.

“The national team? The quality there is beyond doubt and they are world class, just as their predecessors were! You cannot compare different eras, but this team can win everything.

“The Champions League? I think Spanish sides will recover, it is still only the group stages. Real Madrid will be among the favourites but I hope Atletico Madrid win it – they deserve it – or Barcelona, obviously.”
