Samways: Las Palmas lack character

Vinny Samways believes Las Palmas need to start showing ‘character’ if they are to emerge from their current bad run of form.

Los Amarillos have lost all six matches under new Coach Pako Ayestaran and sit bottom of La Liga after 12 rounds of fixtures, with their 49-year-old former midfielder believing it’s not down to a lack of quality.

“The team needs to start showing their character,” Samways told an interview with Diario AS.

“Every team goes through bad patches – even Real Madrid and Barcelona – but the important thing is how you respond to that, you have to stand up for yourself.

“This squad of players has quality and should not be where they are in the table but they will need to start to earn more points.

“They play some really nice football but they need to start winning matches and getting more points because this bad moment could become even worse.

“Roque Mesa? They miss him, maybe he was not valued enough when he was in the team but his role was fundamental.

“He made it easy for others, allowing them to play football and protecting the defence.”
