No goals in disappointing Derbi

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid both fell 10 points behind Barcelona at the top of La Liga after a goalless draw in the Derbi on Saturday.

Wanda Metropoliano bore witness to its first-ever clash between the Madrid rivals, yet a disappointing spectacle saw eight yellow cards dished out, Antoine Griezmann and Karim Benzema both substituted and a first Derbi stalemate in the League for 12 years.

Dani Carvajal was back on the right of Los Blancos' defence after just under two months out with a heart problem, while Luka Modric overcame a fever to start in midfield.

Atleti, meanwhile, were boosted by the return of Koke but stuck with Lucas Hernandez at left-back as Filipe Luis was only deemed fit enough for the substitutes' bench.

Raphael Varane’s shocking backpass fell straight to Correa in the Merengues box, but he flicked his one-on-one with Kiko Casilla wide, when he ought to have scored.

Correa then whacked the ball at Benzema’s head while the striker was down. The Argentine avoided serious punishment, although it wasn’t clear whether his actions had any malice.

Madrid’s dominance in possession struggled to translate into chances as Gabi Fernandez unleashed a volley at Kiko Casilla’s goal from some way out, but it flew half-a-yard wide.

Nonetheless, Toni Kroos played a deft one-two with Ronaldo in Atleti’s box, but he dinked his close-range finish the wrong side of Jan Oblak’s goal.

Ronaldo was enduring his worst start to a season as a Madrid player, and he smacked a free kick on target from a good 40 yards out, forcing Oblak into pushing his explosive effort wide.

Ramos couldn’t nod Casemiro’s knock-down on target from a couple of yards out, but he also accidentally took a boot to the face from Lucas, resulting in a broken nose and him being replaced by Nacho Fernandez for the second half.

The second half took a while to get going, and two chances for Madrid saw Kroos chip a cross-shot onto the roof of Oblak’s net, before Ronaldo dragged a low shot wide after a poor first touch.

Neither Coach was afraid to ruffle feathers as Benzema and Griezmann paid the price for listless performances.

Indeed, the latter’s replacement – Fernando Torres – chipped the ball up for fellow substitute Kevin Gameiro, who was unmarked to his right in Madrid’s box, but his flicked finish was hacked away by Raphael Varane before it could ripple the back of Casilla’s net.

Juanfran was soon counting his lucky stars as he survived a second yellow card for pulling back Marcelino. That was followed by Ronaldo lashing the free kick on target, although Oblak managed to push it away.

The Slovenian then spilled Kroos’ explosive strike from distance, but it was scrambled away in the nick of time, before Ronaldo’s heavy touch after he was found unmarked down the right of the hosts’ box allowed Lucas to fly in with a point-saving block to deny the No 7.
