Moreno: Relationship with Klopp strange

Alberto Moreno has spoken of his ‘strange relationship’ with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, which has improved this season.

The former Sevilla full-back has started nine of Liverpool’s 11 league games this campaign and his form has earned him a recall to the Spanish national team.

“It’s been a strange relationship (with Klopp),” Moreno told an interview with Marca.

“When he came to the club I was selected for every match but then at the start of the following season (2016/17) I stopped being selected and I disappeared.

“James Milner, a right-footed midfielder, was being selected in that position ahead of me and I knew it was a bad situation – nothing was said to me or explained.

“The relationship now? It’s different and there are now times he speaks to me in Spanish, he’s helped me a lot and that shows in my performances, maybe I’m more defensively aware.

“I wanted to stay at the club and fight for my place but when we signed another left-back (Andy Robertson, from Hull) I did not believe I had much future, Klopp told me that he could promise no guaranteed game time.

“In England there’s lots of pressure on defender, you always get blamed even if the mistake was not yours.”
