Iker Casillas is ‘getting closer to hanging up the gloves’ after being announced as the winner of the Golden Foot award.
The Porto goalkeeper won the annual award – handed out to players aged older than 28 – to become the second Spaniard to win, following Andres Iniesta in 2014.
“Every day I’m getting closer to hanging up the gloves,” the 36-year-old is quoted as saying by Diario AS.
“However, if Buffon can reach 40, I am going to give myself the challenge of retiring at least a year after him. To have an extra year in my career.
“I want to stay in football but I don’t know in what role exactly…but I definitely want to stay involved in football.
“Football has given me everything and I’ve been very lucky, I have to be appreciative of what I have been given.
“There have been plenty of highs and lows but I will always remember the happier moments more, they are more prominent.
“It gives me a lot of joy to make a lot of people happy, many of those people who have helped me.
“The best moment in my career? There are two – my first Champions League that we won in 2000 – the club’s eighth – when we beat Valencia in Paris and then internationally, the World Cup in South Africa.”
