Pochettino: Ronaldo is a phenomenon

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has labelled Cristiano Ronaldo a ‘phenomenon’ and a ‘role model’ for younger players.

The Portuguese superstar netted from the spot in the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu a fortnight ago, while the two sides go head-to-head again at Wembley on Wednesday night.

“Cristiano is a phenomenon,” Pochetinno told a wide-ranging interview with marca.

“He deserves his personal awards, not only is he supremely talented but he is an example to any young player and is a role model.

“He works hard and has an incredible motivation, whilst taking good care of himself, it’s what every footballer should aspire too.

“Is he similar to Harry Kane? In terms of professionalism and mentality, yes. They are winners and work so hard.

“Our game against Madrid will be exciting in the same manner as the tie at the Bernabeu, points are at stake of course but it is also a good opportunity for us to confirm positive things spoken about us.

“You have perform at the top level against sides like Madrid – the best team in the world – and we are a young team, so this experience is invaluable.

“Differential in success? The circumstances and context for every club is different in how it is measured. The most important thing is to enjoy what you do and work hard.”
