Spanish FA confirm VAR for next season

La Liga will introduce video assistant referee (VAR) technology from next season, according to Spanish FA chief Juan Luis Larrea.

The Spanish top flight is the only one of Europe's top five leagues to not even have goal-line technology, a system which has been cited as too expensive by La Liga president Javier Tebas.

“For next season our intention is to introduce VAR,” Larrea told Cadena Ser.

“Technology is now coming into football and you have to accept it.”

Larrea insisted that tests would be run in "over 70 matches" in Spain before the system is formally introduced.

The delay surrounding the introduction of technology into the Spanish game has been centred upon long-running disputes and frosty relations between the governing body of La Liga and the Spanish FA.
