Copa round-up: Numancia shock Malaga

Tuesday’s Copa del Rey last-32 action saw Sevilla and Valencia both win but Malaga suffer a giant-killing defeat to second-tier Numancia.

Sevilla had lost their last three games on the spin but bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Segunda B side Cartagena.

Pablo Sarabia scored his first goal of the season to break the deadlock, before Joaquin Correa followed up 10 minutes later and Luis Muriel wrap up the Andalusians’ first-leg advantage.

Valencia also maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a routine 2-0 win against Segunda outfit Real Zaragoza.

A second-string Los Che did not find a way to Alvaro Raton’s goal until the 81st minute, when the free-scoring Rodrigo Moreno fired in. Captain Dani Parejo then secured the result from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

However, a near-full strength Malaga fell to their ninth defeat in 10 matches after a last-gasp brace handed Numancia a 2-1 win.

Jose Recio gave Malaga the lead barely midway through the first half, and that appeared to be enough for the Andalusians’ first triumph of the season.

Yet they were denied by a double-goal salvo deep in injury time as Nacho Sanchez’ 93rd-minute finish was followed up by Alberto Escassi moments later.

Alaves, meanwhile, picked up their second win in four games under Gianni De Biasi with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Getafe, Christian Santos the Basques’ hero three minutes from time.

Finally, Sergio Leon’s brace was enough for Real Betis to beat Segunda strugglers Cadiz 2-1.
