Ron: Five awards no coincidence

Cristiano Ronaldo believes being crowned the world’s best player for the fifth time is ‘not a coincidence’ on a ‘special day’ for him.

The Portugal and Real Madrid forward beat Lionel Messi and Neymar to win the award, which only began in 2016 after splitting with the Ballon d’Or, for a second consecutive year.

“This award means a lot to me,” Ronaldo told reporters outside the gala after winning.

“To be the best in the world five times is not a coincidence and obviously this is another beautiful moment in my career and something that I have always wanted.

“I wanted to win this once more and I’ve now won best player on five occasions so I’m very happy, it is a special day. The second straight year being The Best men’s player.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of my teammates, at both Real Madrid and Portugal.

“To all those who like Cristiano and to all those who support me, this is a unique moment in my life.”
