Simeone hopes win is ‘turning point’

Diego Simeone is hopeful Atletico Madrid’s 1-0 victory at Celta Vigo on Sunday can be a ‘turning point’ in their season.

The victory – secured with Kevin Gameiro’s first half goal – was only Atleti’s fifth victory in 12 matches this season across La Liga and the Champions League.

“I hope this is a turning point,” is quoted as telling reporters by Diario AS.

“It is an important win, it was what we needed. Due to the international break, the games against Leganes, Barcelona and Qarabag [in the Champions League], we had to wait a long time for a win.

“But that is a reason why we worked and fought so hard in this game, we displayed that we can suffer and we can soak up pressure to defend our lead.

“We created chances too, Sergio (Alvarez, Celta’s goalkeeper) saved from Griezmann for instance.

“Celta have a good home record and always score there, so we are happy.

“Gameiro is getting better all the time and for him to play and find the net is important for him and for us.

“Now we have started a difficult week but this win was very important and we must use it to build from here.”
