Xavi explains United rejection

Former Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez has explained how he turned down a move to Manchester United as the Blaugrana were his ‘favourite team’.

Now 37, Xavi spent 17 years at the Camp Nou before joining Qatari side Al Sadd after he won eight league titles and four Champions League titles with the Catalan giants.

He has now revealed how he spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother Martin – who was then a scout for the English giants, regarding a move to Old Trafford.

“Sometimes we were discussing with Manchester United and Alex Ferguson's brother to try and join me there, but I decided to stay in Barcelona because it's my club,” Xavi told the BBC World Service.

“I was thinking always in Barcelona, it’s my favourite team, I feel Barcelona in my heart, it's the best club in the world.”
