Spurs blast ‘distasteful’ Spanish report

Tottenham Hotspur have blasted a ‘blatantly wrong’ and ‘distasteful’ report in Marca on their club being ‘hated’ due to their Jewish origins.

The Madrid-based daily sports newspaper – which has the highest circulation in Spain – claimed Spurs were ‘hated, but with good footballing style’.

The club, based in North London, traditionally draw large sections of their support from the city’s Jewish community, with the newspaper claiming this is the main reason why they are ‘hated’.

“Their Jewish origin has made them into a club hated by rival fans,” read the description in Monday’s edition.

“However, in their 135 years of existence they have always had style and great players.”

A statement from the North London club in response to the article read: “We are astonished that a publication such as Marca, which presents itself as an alleged source of professional journalism, has seen fit to publish such an article which is blatantly wrong and wholly distasteful.”
