‘Sevilla didn’t deserve Athletic loss’

Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo insists his side did not deserve to lose 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Mikel Vesga’s goal was enough to end Athletic’s winless run of four matches and send Sevilla tumbling down to fifth in La Liga, and Berizzo rued the sloppiness that his team exhibited at San Mames.

“We had our best chances in the first half and we didn’t take them,” the Coach said after the game.

“Athletic hurt us with their goal, but no matter how hard we tried in the second half, we played without fluidity.

“However, I don’t think that, judging by the run of play, we deserved less than Athletic. I didn’t think we should’ve lost.

“Vesga’s goal came from a move that we could’ve defended better. We didn’t find enough space against an Athletic side that backed off.

“We had to get the ball forward in order to pose them problems, but our second half wasn’t good and our attacking changes didn’t work. We didn’t play with the necessary movement or cohesion.”
