Spain miss out on WC top seed

Spain will not be among the top seeded teams at next summer’s World Cup despite their strong record in qualification.

France, Portugal and Argentina all qualified for next summer’s tournament in Russia on Tuesday night, meaning Julen Lopetegui’s side miss out in being in the top pot of teams for December's draw.

La Roja are set to be ranked 8th in FIFA’s new set of World Rankings, which are released on Monday, but due to host nation Russia – currently ranked 64th – earning an automatic seeded spot they will miss out.

The hosts will join world champions Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Belgium, Poland, Argentina and France among the top seeds while 2010 champions Spain will have to make do with pot two.
