Iniesta revels in ‘very special’ renewal

Barcelona club captain Andres Iniesta has described signing a contract ‘for life’ at the club as a ‘very special day’ in his career.

The 33-year-old’s renewal at the Blaugrana was made official on Friday, allowing him to have a say in his own future at the end of each season.

“This is a very special day for me as it allows me to continue dreaming,” Iniesta told the press conference.

“This great club has seen me grow and evolve. To be captain of Barcelona is an amazing privilege for me – I love this club and will continue to be here as long as my body and mind are able.

“I cannot be anywhere else other than here, I have said it many times before and I will say it again.

“At the end of each season we will make a joint decision on what is best for both parties. This is priceless.

“I can't describe my emotions. I came here as a 12-year-old and I'm still here at 33.

“This renewal fills me with pride, joy and happiness. Right now, my focus is to get to the end of the season and win more trophies.

“The renewal shows confidence, excitement, ambition, affection and mutual respect. These are the important things.

“I won't be here just for the sake of it. I want to be in places where I can add something, be important and relevant.

“The term ‘for life’ doesn't mean I'll play here forever but only play 2 games a season. I'll be the first to know when it's over.

“The club wants Messi to be here, like we all do. And Leo wants to be here. Hopefully this story never ends!

“At 33 that doesn't mean you automatically have problems playing, but yes, you do think about a lot more things.

“Retiring? I've never thought about my future plans. My present is playing, enjoying being a footballer. Football is my life, I'm sure that (after I retire) I will continue in the game at some level, I love it.”
