Pique abused at Spain training session

Gerard Pique was met with boos and chants for him to leave the Spanish national team at an opening training session on Monday.

The Barcelona defender had been a vocal supporter of Sunday’s Catalan referendum, which had been declared illegal by the Spanish state and Constitutional Court.

Over 1,000 spectators turned up at Las Rozas with many bringing banners, shouting insults and chanting for the 30-year-old to quit the national team.

Chants of ‘Pique out’ and banners stating ‘Pique, lowlife, leave now!” while he emerged and left the pitch to a chorus of whistles.

Pique had written a sarcastic Tweet earlier on Monday describing the Spanish police force’s tactics during the referendum on Sunday: “They have acted professionally and in a proportional and proportionate manner.”

The defender, a Catalan native, had offered to quit the Spanish national team before the 2018 World Cup after the ‘worst experience’ of his career on Sunday in playing in front of an empty Camp Nou.
