Real Sociedad were left to rue defensive errors as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat away to Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Europa League.
Both sides cruised to opening day victories but the Russians took the early initiative in the group thanks to an early strike from Emiliano Ariel Rigoni and a double from Aleksandr Kokorin.
Rigoni netted a powerful left-footed effort in the fifth minute after midfielder Ruben Pardo meekly surrendered possession for the visitors.
An error of judgement from Geronimo Rulli on a cross left Kokorin to take advantage before defender Diego Llorente pulled a goal back from Eusebio Sacristan’s just before the break.
However, forward Kokorin restored Zenit’s two-goal advantage on the hour mark from Branislav Ivanovic’s cross.
La Real now face a double header with Macedonian side FK Vardar Skopje, who are yet to pick up a point.
