Alaves consider Poyet appointment

Former Real Betis Coach Gus Poyet could be back in La Liga as managerless Alaves consider an approach for the out-of-work Uruguayan.

The 49-year-old resigned as Shanghai Shenhua boss earlier this month after four successive league defeats in an underwhelming 10-month spell in the Chinese Super League.

The former Brighton and Sunderland boss was appointed as Los Verdiblancos manager in May 2016 but was sacked less than six months later after a string of poor results and player fallouts.

The former Uruguay international and several of his former Betis players have since exchanged public words of distain, with the Coach stating the Seville-based club was the ‘worst experience’ of his career.

Alaves dismissed Luis Zubeldia on Sunday and have lost all five of their opening La Liga games without scoring a goal.

Poyet is the latest name linked to the vacant position by Cadena Cope, with Aitor Karanka, Javi Gracia and Javier Aguirre among the names who have reportedly turned down the offer.
