‘Scoring record motivates us’

Real Madrid’s run of scoring in 73 consecutive matches ‘motivates’ the club to continue winning matches and trophies, says Zinedine Zidane.

No professional European team has ever achieved such a run of scoring, while it has matched the streak of legendary Brazilian side Santos, for whom Pele played.

“This is a strong indicator of how well we are playing,” remarked Zidane in a press conference.

“You want to win every game and to do that you have to score goals of course, so we want to keep this run going for as long as possible.

“We know we are always capable of scoring goals and this speaks volumes of the players as they are capable of scoring any time, but we don’t go into games thinking we will take the lead.

“It motivates us as we go out thinking we need to score and that is always our play, to play with the right intensity and try to ensure we score as soon as possible.”

However, despite reports that scoring against Real Betis would set a new world record, reports in Spain have since suggested that Argentine club River Plate netted for 96 consecutive games between 1936 and 1939.
