Villarreal facing keeper crisis?

Cedric Bakambu may be calling for “the new BBC” after his brace against Alaves on Sunday, but Villarreal could be facing a goalkeeping crisis.

Bakambu’s pair of well-taken finishes, sandwiched by a goal from strike partner Carlos Bacca, secured Villarreal a 3-0 victory, which also lost Luis Zubeldia his job as Alaves Coach.

The Frenchman subsequently claimed on Twitter that Barcelona’s old BBC trident had resurrected in the form of him, Bacca and Samu Castillejo on Twitter.

However, the result and performance were overshadowed by Mariano Barbosa being admitted to hospital after the game.

Barbosa took a blow to the head off Munir El Haddadi towards the end of the match, and despite being able to finish up, he vomited and felt dizzy on the Yellow Submarine’s trip home.

The goalkeeper was eventually discharged from hospital, but the club noted he would be closely monitored for the next 48 hours.

Villarreal’s next game is on Thursday against Espanyol, and there is a chance that the Argentine will not have recovered in time.

Fran Escriba’s side are struggling between the sticks as it is, with serious knee injuries already keeping out Sergio Asenjo and Andres Fernandez.

In the event Barbosa does not make it back, Escriba will have to call upon B shot-stopper Ander Cantero for his senior debut.
