Benedito: Bartomeu on the brink

Former Barcelona presidential candidate Augusti Benedito has given current incumbent Josep Maria Bartomeu (pictured) ‘a month and a half’ before he resigns.

A vote of no confidence in the under-fire Bartomeu looms with Benedito’s campaign gathering 7,278 of the required 16,570 signatures to force the ballot.

It is reported that 2,920 signatures were collected on Saturday ahead of the Catalan derby against Espanyol while a further 3,360 were gathered ahead of the Champions League opener against Juventus on Tuesday.

“It is 40 percent of what we require," Benedito is quoted as saying by Marca.

“When we have all of our machinery working at full capacity, we should get at least 400 signatures a day.

“I have no doubt that on October 2 they will accept the 18,000 or 19,000 signatures we present, although they are changing the criteria as it suits them.”

Former Barca president Joan Laporta has already confessed he has signed the petition.
