Correa strike rescues Sevilla

Joaquin Correa rescued Sevilla a 2-2 draw with 10-man Liverpool in their Champions League curtain-raiser on Wednesday.

Correa’s well-taken strike with 20 minutes left on the clock and Roberto Firmino's missed penalty earned Sevilla a point at Anfield after they fell 2-1 down.

The Andalusians brought in Simon Kjaer, Nicolas Pareja, Guido Pizarro and Correa from their 3-0 win against Eibar last weekend, while Philippe Coutinho featured in Liverpool’s matchday squad for the first time this season after his failed transfer to Barcelona.

Los Nervionenses came out on top in their previous meeting with the Reds – the 2016 Europa League Final.

Dejan Lovren horribly misjudged Sergio Escudero’s low cross just five minutes in, gifting Wissam Ben Yedder a tap-in.

Liverpool soon equalised through Roberto Firmino’s identical finish, before Emre Can fired inches wide of far post from inside the box.

Mohamed Salah then robbed Steven N’Zonzi and unleashed a shot that deflected over Sergio Rico via Kjaer for 2-1.

Pareja escaped a handball but wasn’t so lucky when he hauled down Sadio Mane for a Reds penalty, yet Firmino clipped the post from 12 yards out.

Former Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno could’ve won it for the hosts, but his angled strike was pushed away by Rico.

Sevilla boss Eduardo Berizzo was sent to the stands for refusing to give the ball back to Liverpool twice, before Coutinho appeared for the final 15 minutes.

Rico pushed away Georginio Wijnaldum's daisy-cutter, yet Loris Karius could do nothing about Correa’s dragback and curler straight down the other end.

Luis Muriel slotted wide with only Karius to beat in stoppage time, which was followed by Liverpool defender Joe Gomez being sent off for two cards.
