Villarreal and Celta Vigo got their first wins of the season in La Liga Week 3, while Girona were brought back down to earth.

Kicking off the weekend were Leganes and Getafe on Friday evening, and it was the visitors who won this Madrid derby 2-1.

Mauro Arambarri gave Getafe the lead six minutes before half-time, before Miguel Angel Guerrero equalised midway through the second period.

However, the bragging rights were secured by Alvaro Jimenez in the final 10 minutes.

Next to emerge victorious were Athletic Bilbao, who ended Girona’s fairy-tale start to life in Primera with a 2-0 triumph.

Iker Muniain broke the deadlock on 25 minutes, followed by Aritz Aduriz bagging his fifth goal of the season to keep new boss Jose Angel Ziganda unbeaten after five games at the helm.

Celta, meanwhile, finally got off the mark under Juan Carlos Unzue with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Alaves on Sunday.

Maxi Gomez scored a brace on his debut against Real Sociedad, which ended in a 3-2 defeat for the Galicians, but his 34th-minute effort this time around was not in vain.

Villarreal rounded the weekend off in style, defeating Real Betis 3-1 for their first win of the season.

Sergio Leon again underlined his credentials as Ruben Castro’s heir inside just 11 minutes, but goals from Carlos Bacca, Samu Castillejo and Enes Unal either side of the break eased the pressure on Fran Escriba.
