Soler starts Spain campaign

A long-range effort from Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler got Spain off to a winning start in the European Under-21 Championships qualifiers.

The hosts frustrated Albert Celades’s side – for whom this was the first match since their final defeat to Germany in June – who failed to create many clear-cut opportunities throughout.

Soler, 20, then broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion with 25 minutes remaining with an effort from range flying into the top corner to get Spain off to a winning start.

Slovakia, Northern Ireland, Albania and Iceland are the other four sides in Group 2 of the qualifiers for the tournament in 2019.

Estonia: Igonen, Magi, Lukka (Kuusk 74), Kaldma (Klein 86), Lilander, Sinyavskiy, Slein, Ainsalu, Liivak, Riiberg (Poom 7), Jarva

Spain: Sivera; Carmona, Unai Nunez, Mere, Aaron Martin; Carlos Soler, Mikel Merino, Rodrigo, Ceballos, Oyarzabal (Pedraza 36), Borja Mayoral (Marc Gual 77)
