Julen Lopetegui says Spain can change formation but not their style after Tuesday’s 8-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein.
Lopetegui’s decision to field a back three against Liechtenstein paid dividends in the form of eight goals without reply for Spain, and the Coach expressed his delight with how La Roja were becoming more flexible in a tactical sense.
“The difference between the national teams was huge and we did what we set out to do,” he said after the game.
“We wanted to play like a serious team and kill the game off early… We achieved that with Ramos’ goal.
“After that, we scored a second, which gave us the necessary calmness to play how we did.
“Scoring in the first minute gives you that calmness, which paved the way for us.
“You can face surprises in games like these. The most negative news was the yellow card to Busquets.
“We had a lot of players on warnings and if, in these two games, we only had one suspension… But the truth is that it happened when we were calmer.
“Formation? This isn’t the first time we’ve played in this formation. We have to find attacking solutions in certain games.
“We must have two or three [tactical] options but without changing our style, because that’s what makes our players unique.
“Aspas? It’s good that players like him are scoring, gaining confidence and feeling that they’ve had their chance.
“I wish more could’ve played. Those who have been with us for these 10 days and haven’t played have still helped us a lot, and I want to highlight them as part of this group. I stand by the attitude of these players.”
